UNITAR, EURAS, and Istanbul Aydın University Launch Global Platform on Maritime Governance and Security
25 September 2026, New York/Istanbul - The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), the Eurasian Universities Union (EURAS), and Istanbul Aydın University (IAU) launched the Platform on Maritime Governance and Security at the event on the margins of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on 25 September 2026.
The partnership responds to emerging challenges facing the maritime sector and supports efforts to advance Sustainable Development Goal 14 on life below water and commitments under the Pact for the Future.
The new platform will bring together policymakers, academics and maritime experts to facilitate international knowledge exchange across various thematic areas, including maritime governance, ocean policy and maritime security, with a focus on practical training, scalable online learning, applied research, executive education and multilateral policy dialogue.
According to the 2025 UNCTAD Review on Maritime Transport, maritime routes carry most of the international trade; governments face unprecedented complexities ranging from traditional security risks to sustainable resource management. In alignment with the UN Call for AI Governance, the platform features a dedicated thematic component focusing on ethical AI in maritime surveillance, autonomous vessel regulation, and technology-driven capacity building.
By combining UNITAR's capacity development expertise, EURAS' academic network, and Istanbul Aydın University's institutional support, the Platform on Maritime Governance and Security creates a unique space to foster transformation of international commitments into practical knowledge, strengthen institutional readiness, and support more effective responses to maritime governance challenges at national, regional, and global levels.
