Palestinians Applaud UK’s Intention on Recognizing Country
(MENAFN) Palestinian officials commended Britain’s declaration on Tuesday signaling its plan to acknowledge the State of Palestine during a United Nations General Assembly gathering in September.
They described the decision as a reaffirmation of the UK's adherence to global legal standards.
“We welcome the United Kingdom's announcement of its intention to recognize the State of Palestine in September,” stated Hussein al-Sheikh, Vice President of Palestine, on X.
He referred to the move as “a confirmation of its commitment to international law and legitimacy and the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and the establishment of their independent state, which ensures the protection of the two-state solution.”
Al-Sheikh further emphasized that the UK’s position “constitutes a serious contribution to consolidating security and stability and achieving peace in the region.”
The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates released a statement commending British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s declaration, calling it “a courageous step that places the UK on the right side of history.”
The Ministry also lauded Britain’s broader stance on the Palestinian cause, particularly regarding Gaza, and expressed appreciation for its backing of Palestinian efforts to attain complete political and judicial control over all areas occupied in 1967.
According to the Ministry, this development represents “a path toward achieving peace in accordance with international legitimacy and the Arab Peace Initiative.”
